WHAT IS COUNSELLING?

Counselling is the opportunity to discuss your thoughts and feelings about things that you face in every-day life. It is a collaborative process in which you (as the expert in your own life) with a qualified and competent counsellor, gain greater awareness and find your own answers.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Counselling is for everybody. In effect, anybody with a willingness to explore any area of life can benefit from meeting a counsellor.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Counselling is a continuous process where a counsellor uses a psychological framework to facilitate insight and awareness to help you discover your own answers. This process takes anywhere between 4-20 sessions depending upon your needs. Each session lasts for approximately one hour.

WHAT WILL OTHERS THINK OF ME IF I DECIDE TO MEET A COUNSELLOR?

Because of the stigma attached to Counselling, it is valid to ask this question. However, through this website we hope to educate people and create awareness about what counselling really is. A day is coming when people will see counselling in a positive light- as a way to enhance their personal growth and wellbeing.

IS COUNSELLING A PROFESSIONAL SERVICE?

Yes, counselling at BTH Integrated Wellness & Therapy is a premium professional service. We follow the International guidelines for counselling practice as stipulated by various professional Counselling bodies.

ARE COUNSELLORS ADVICE-GIVERS AND PROBLEM-SOLVERS?

Counsellors are NOT advice- givers or problem- solvers. Instead they are people trained to help an individual gain awareness and grow through a warm and understanding relationship.

Since every individual and their life situation is unique and different, there can never be a ‘one- answer- suits- all’ solution.

HOW CAN A THIRD PERSON (WHO DOESN’T KNOW ME) HELP ME OUT WITH MY PROBLEM?

The reason counselling is effective is because the counsellor IS a third person. This enables the counsellor to be neutral, objective and non-judgemental.

WILL THE INFORMATION I SHARE BE KEPT AS A SECRET?

Yes. All information that you share will be kept confidential except in situations involving crime, self-harm and similar issues. No information can be disclosed to another person without your consent.  Every counsellor is ethically bound to maintain confidentiality

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE COUNSELLOR GETS AFFECTED BY WHAT I SHARE?

Counsellors are trained to feel with the client and not feel for the client.  Professionally trained counsellors learn the skills and coping mechanisms to be objective and empathetic with clients and not sympathetic and emotionally involved.

IS THIS COUNSELLING BASED ON ANY RELIGION?

No. This counsellor works with an open, unbiased and non-judgemental attitude with no religious inclination except if requested for by the client.

WHAT IF I BECOME DEPENDENT ON THE COUNSELLOR FOR EVERYTHING?

Since counselling does not mean advising, counsellor-dependency is unlikely. In fact, the counselling relationship will enable you to become more self-reliant and more accepting of yourself. Ultimately, you learn to help yourself.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF COUNSELLING?

The feedback is usually positive.  Phrases like “feel lighter”, “gain clarity”, “learn more about myself  and my partner”, “feel less stuck or overwhelmed”, “feel energized”, “feel good, positive and hopeful”, “ can take decisions and actions”, “see positive changes”, “improve relationships” and so on abound.

HOW MUCH DO I NEED TO PAY?

The fees are usually communicated after the initial consultation, assessment and conceptualization session

WHY CAN’T I JUST TALK TO A FRIEND OR A FAMILY MEMBER?

A friend or family member is not professionally trained to help you grow, heal and change. A trained therapist is interested in helping you find your own answers by helping you connect with what is true and right for you.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF YOU ARE THE RIGHT THERAPIST FOR ME?

You really need to meet me face-to-face in order to get a good idea of what I’m like as a person and as a professional. At our first meeting you should keep these questions in mind:

  • How easy is it to talk to her?
  • Is she really listening to me?
  • Does she seem confident and competent?
  • Do I feel comfortable with her? Can I trust her?
  • Could I ever show her the deepest, ugliest parts of myself?
  • Does she seem to have the capacity to handle me
  • Do I like her?
CAN YOU PRESCRIBE MEDICINE?

No, I cannot. However, I can refer you to medical doctors who are allowed to prescribe medicine. I have some very competent physicians and psychiatrists on my team but they can only come on board if I have your written consent.

MUST I WORK WITH YOU?

After we have met, you reserve a right to choose not to work with me at all or to terminate our contract at any time, upon settlement of ALL outstanding bills.

I can also choose not to work with you. My decision to work with you or not to, will be communicated to you (with or without any reasons provided) by our second meeting.
