SELF-AWARENESS

A lot has been happening recently. Social media is rife with photos and video clips of an exotic island, exotic food, exotic people and exotic fun. I have seen a lot of negative reaction and vituperation about the apparent profligacy, and I decided to pause and observe my insides instead of just criticizing,  wanted to be sure I was not feeling deprived of the island experience or experiencing sour grapes. I took out time to process my thoughts and impressions and I came to the conclusion that I will not spend my money in that way (assuming I ever made that kind of money). The reason I know this for a certainty is simply because I have become well acquainted with ‘me’.  I know what I like, who I like and why.   I know my strengths, I know my deficiencies and I know my fears.  I daresay that I am self-aware.

Self-awareness is the ability to recognize and understand one’s own thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and characteristics. It involves having an understanding of oneself as a distinct individual with unique qualities and experiences. It is insight into one’s own thoughts and emotions which allows you make more informed decisions, better understand your strengths, your weaknesses and navigate interactions more effectively. Becoming more self-aware is critical to enhancing decision-making, relationships and overall well-being.
So, before we publish our opinions about the island and the entire shebang, we must pause and reflect about what we may do with that level of affluence.  When we practice self-awareness, we may be surprised at the things our hearts pulsate for. Instead of judging so harshly, we can use this chance to recognize our own thoughts, our feelings, our characteristics and our behaviour. It is important we check behind our hearts to see if we are whining because we have been island-deprived and experiencing sour grapes or if it is a genuine analysis of the merits and the demerits of the island experience.
